Since leaving Shetland, he has been seen many times, appearing in excellent spirits and good health.

Moreover, the 58-year-old actor told Radio Times magazine that finding roles at this age is difficult. He continued,

Nonetheless, he suffered from mental illness and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2004. He was grateful for the support of his friends and family at a difficult time.

Douglas Henshall also encourages others to seek help who are struggling with mental illness.
